December 2001
The mild weather continues. A good thing for us who need to ship material to the construction site. The roof is done. When the house has been sealed it can snow. The ocean is murmuring, I walk inside and put more wood in the fireplace.

November 2001
It is now autumn even at Harstena! Wind and rain or sunny days succeed eachother. The water level changes too. Elof is fishing for flounder and the foundation for the new house has been cast. The elk-hunt resulted in 3 elks, the most elks shot at Harstena at once. Shooters Niklas and Rune are congratulated!

October 2001
Autumn approaches even if the summer lingers on for a while here in the outer archipelago. We have a few warm sunny days and the leaves are still green, but the time will come soon enough when we will need both rainclothes and high boots. We're laying the foundation for the new house and the fyke net was taken out of the lake a calm day. Heavy lifting demanding strong hands. The conferance groups are done for this year and everyone seemed happy!

September 2001
We have a hunch that the autumn will come this year too. Rainy days mix with sunny days. When the water gets colder pikes and perches gets more eager to store up for the winter.

August 2001
Late summer time, shorter days and dark evenings when you can still be outside without mosquitos! Here comes smaller groups, people wanting to talk after the holliday and at the same time experience the silence on the island. En Englishman I met the other day asked where the people living in all of the houses were. The answer is that most of them are on the mainland working, comming out on the weekends, at the end of the summer.

July 2001
Spring has arrived. From the sea a full serenade can be heard from eiders and long-tailed ducks. Ice and snow is but a memory and the slopes are green. The archipelago is still quiet but the occasional visitor discover the charm of the silence and the bright spring evenings. This is what brings peace and recuperation for the soul. We know that the warmth is comming soon with a period of more intense activities.

June 2001
Summertime! What we have longed for is here! Enjoy the swallows flying shuttle service feeding their young all day. If you walk towards the sea at dawn you can greet the sun at the horizon in the east and hear the silence. The view is staggering. If you take a walk in the evening you can find the lesser butterfly orchids flowering and see the moon set behind a pinetree.

Maj 2001
May has had a flying start, the grass shines green, lesser celandine forms yellow carpets in the slopes. The old-fashioned, double daffodils are present in all gardens on Harstena, and the birches are becomming green. It is truly a sign of summer and the smell of tar can be sensed down at the boathouses. Those with cabins the year around starts to become active so the weekends are full of life and motion on the island. Swallows and pied wagtails are buisy building nests and an intense chirping can be heard.

April 2001
Spring has arrived. From the sea a full serenade can be heard from eiders and long-tailed ducks. Ice and snow is but a memory and the slopes are green. The archipelago is still quiet but the occasional visitor discover the charm of the silence and the bright spring evenings. This is what brings peace and recuperation for the soul. We know that the warmth is comming soon with a period of more intense activities.

March 2001
Now we see the first signs of spring! The ice has broken outside the island. Only in the port of Fyrudden there were some ice floes packed together. The birds are in motion. We saw a large group of tufted ducks, maybe as many as five hundred. Some goosanders sat on a row on the ice and many flew in packs. Wild ducks and geese were also seen. There is still snow on islands and rocky islets but the midday thaw is working on it. We prepare the first groups of people who, despite the icy conditions, want to get out and breath fresh ocean air.

February 2001
SSo the snow and cold came to us. It is bitingly cold when I go outside to collect firewood for the stove. It looks like the sea could become calm. If it remains calm and cold there could be ice tomorrow, at least close to land. Elof cannot use the boats now. Fishing will have to wait for a while. He has eiders in a box in the freezer and every now and then he grabs one and stuffs a gnome. Then we feast on bird casserole. The eider steak is saved for the restaurant in the summer.

January 2001
The snow that came the days before the New Year was short lived. Now the days are once again mild, a January spring. I walk outside for a brisk walk but I only come as far as the greenhouse where I remain standing watching a small fellow running around the dry leaves of the vine. It is a wren. The hills are wet from the rain. In the forest the silence is disrupted by a goldcrest and some long-tailed tits rushes around in the branches. Otherwise the silence is tangible, the sea is greyish and calm.
